Project - SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT


PROCESS DESCRIPTION

The proposed Sewage Treatment Plant is based on the technology known as Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR). The basic concept of the process is growing sufficient microorganisms as Biofilm in special kind of carriers namely Biomedia, to have efficient and effective biodegradation within limited volume. The biomedia move and rotate in the reactors continuously and keep the microbial population more active. The aeration given to the reactors constantly maintain the biomedia in suspension and also provide required oxygen for biomass development and biodegradation of pollutants in the waste water.

The MBBR system has its own advantages over other treatment methods. The major advantages are requirement of less space, accepting shock BOD loads, withstanding wide pH fluctuations and less sludge production. Further, required microorganisms in the form of Biofilm will be automatically maintained within the biomedia and no need to have sludge recycling.

The wastewater coming out of toilets, kitchen and office washrooms is collected primarily in an underground sewage collection tank. The collection tank is provided with aeration to prevent formation of smell causing gases. Aeration also helps mixing of the sewage to have a uniform feed to the treatment system. The debris present in the sewage is removed by screens before it enters the collection tank.

The sewage from the collection tank is pumped to the Sewage Treatment Plant by the submersible pumps installed in the collection tank. The quantity of sewage entering the aeration tank of the STP is measured by the flow meter installed in the inlet.

The sewage entering the aeration tanks (filled with biomedia) is subjected to continuous aeration. Aeration accelerates the growth of microorganisms in the bioreactors and also provides oxygen for the oxidation of pollutants present in the sewage.

The solid particles from the treated sewage are made to settle by adding a flocculent and leaving the sewage in a settling tank. The sludge settled in the bottom of the settling tank is being removed automatically time to time by an electrical actuator valve system. The treated water overflows from the settling tank is disinfected, filtered and stored in treated water tank for reuse.

All the pumps and air blowers of the system are made as duty – standby to have uninterrupted operation of the STP. The functioning of the sewage pumps is controlled by the level control switches which are activated based on the sewage level in the tank.

The STP can be operated continuously by allowing a uniform sewage flow to the system calculating the average volume of sewage generated in a day. However, the system will function under batch mode of operation depending on the level of sewage in the underground collection tank. Since the bioreactors / aeration tanks are continuously aerated, the batch mode of operation will not affect the microbial growth and the process

COMPONENTS OF THE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT


1. Fat / Grease Trap:

A Fat / Grease trap will be installed to the upstream of the sewage collection tank to trap the oily stuff and large suspended particles. The outlet of the grease trap will lead to the sewage collection tank through a coarse screen installed in the inlet of the collection tank.

2. Sewage Collection and Pumping System:

The sewage collection tank will receive the raw sewage from the office and the accommodation area. Submersible sewage lifting pumps installed in the collection tank will pump the sewage at a uniform rate to the STP through the screen and grit removing stages. Two sewage pumps will be installed in the collection tank to work as duty – standby basis.

3. Manual Bar Screens:

A coarse screen will be installed in the entry point of sewage collection tank and the fine screen will be provided in the inlet of bioreactors for the removal of floating debris from the sewage. The coarse screen will have spacing of 10 mm and the fine screen will have a spacing of 5 mm.

4. Biological Treatment System:

The aerobic biological treatment system which is the heart of the sewage treatment plant will have the following major components


a. Bioreactors – MBBR
b. Aeration System

a. Bioreactors (MBBR): There are two bioreactors connected in series. Each reactor will be provided with aeration grids at the bottom. Each aeration tank is filled with specific quantity of the biomedia, made of plastic, which give sufficient space for the growth of microorganisms as Biofilm. The sewage inlet is located at the top of the MBBR 1 and the outlet is located on the opposite side of MBBR 2. Perforated Screens mounted between the two reactors and the outlet of the second reactor prevents the passing of biomedia. The outlet of the MBBR 2 is connected to the Flocculation tank.

b. Aeration System: The Aeration System consists of 2 numbers of Air Blowers. One Blower will be on duty while the other will be standby. The Blowers will provide air for the microbial growth, biodegradation of pollutants and also for the rotation of biomedia in the reactors.

5. Flocculation System:

Aerobically treated sewage with inactive biomass will flow by gravity to the flocculation tank. A flocculent solution at required concentration is dosed continuously to the flocculation tank. A low speed agitator fitted in the flocculation tank helps mixing of flocculent with the treated sewage. By the action of flocculent, the small particles of the treated sewage joint together to form larger particles, the flock. The flocculated water flows to the settling tank by gravity.

6. Solid Settling System:

The settling tank with the conical bottom is fitted with tube settlers to have more surface area for solid settling. The separation of solid from water is achieved by laminar flow developed between the tubes. The heavier flocks slide down along the side of the tubes, whereas the clear water rises up and flows out. The sludge settling at the bottom of the settling tank will be removed time to time by an automatic actuator valve system and directed to the sludge-holding tank. The clear water from the settling tank will overflow to the Filter Feed Tank.

7. Filtration System:

The filtration system consists of a Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) and an Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) to remove remaining suspended solids from the treated water to ensure its total conformance with the discharge standards set by the regulatory authorities. The Filters will have automatic backwashing systems by taking water from the Treated Water tank.

8. Disinfection System:

The water coming out of the filters will passes though the Disinfection System to ensure complete removal of harmful organisms in the water.
